Epic Experiences to Try During Your Visit to Galena, Illinois

Galena, Illinois is one of those small towns that feels like stepping into a preserved slice of 1800s America—without it feeling like a museum you can’t touch. It’s especially popular for weekend getaways because it blends history, scenery, and a walkable downtown.

If you like views and outdoor time, the surrounding hills and river bluffs make Galena surprisingly scenic for the Midwest. You can hike, bike, or just take in overlooks of the Galena River Valley. Where to Stay

The Painted Cat of Galena is a super unique Victorian bed & breakfast in Galena, Illinois. It’s not just a place to stay; it’s part historic inn, part cat-lover experience. The house itself is a restored 1891 Queen Anne Victorian home, so you get stained glass, antique details, big porches, and cozy old-world rooms that feel like stepping back in time. It’s located just a short walk from downtown Galena, so you can easily explore shops and restaurants without needing to drive.

What really makes it famous, though, is the “cat” part of the name. The inn is home to several friendly resident cats that roam the property, lounge in common areas, and basically make the place feel extra cozy and lived-in rather than formal. Guests also get perks like homemade breakfasts, themed rooms, and a relaxed, homey atmosphere that’s very different from a standard hotel.

1. Explore the Charming Downtown

One of the biggest draws is its historic downtown along Main Street. The area is packed with 19th-century brick buildings that now house boutiques, antique shops, art galleries, and cozy cafés. It’s the kind of place where you can spend hours just browsing without a plan and still feel like you’ve seen something meaningful.

2. Trek with Goats at Hoof It

One of the most unique experiences we have had is walking with goats at Hoof It. Hoof It Goat Treks in Galena is a playful, outdoor experience where visitors take a guided 1.5 mile hike through private rolling hills and wooded trails while a friendly herd of goats walks right alongside them. Instead of a typical hike focused on distance or speed, the pace is relaxed and interactive, with opportunities to stop, feed the goats, take photos, and learn about the land.

3. Go Wine Tasting with a View

Wine tasting in Galena is one of the most popular things to do in town because it combines small-town charm with a surprisingly strong local wine scene. Most of the tasting rooms are centered around Main Street in the downtown. Beyond downtown, you’ll also find vineyard experiences just outside town where you can sit among rolling hills, sip wine with a view, and sometimes even tour the vineyard itself. We suggest Fergedaboudit Winery as they have sweet wine, and a gorgeous view of the rolling hillside.

4. Tour President Uylsses Grant’s House

Touring the Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historic Site in Galena is one of the most meaningful historic experiences in town. Visitors take a guided tour through the house, which still contains many original furnishings and personal items from the Grant family, giving it a very authentic, lived-in feel rather than a staged exhibit. The tour is relatively short—about 25–30 minutes—and run in small groups, which keeps it personal and easy to follow.

5. Stroll Grant Park

Grant Park in Galena is one of the town’s most scenic and historically rich public spaces, sitting right along the Galena River just a short walk from downtown. One of its most recognizable features is the statue and memorial elements honoring Ulysses S. Grant, reflecting Galena’s deep connection to the former president. The park also has a pedestrian bridge that links directly to the historic downtown shopping district, making it a natural stopping point when you’re exploring Main Street.

6. Experience Coffee Flights at Wired Rabbit

Wired Rabbit is a cozy downtown coffee shop in Galena that’s become a favorite stop for both locals and visitors exploring Main Street. The menu focuses on well-made espresso drinks, lattes, and seasonal coffee flights, along with pastries and light bites that pair well with a slow morning or mid-afternoon break. We love that Wired Rabbit is part of the downtown setting, and the games they have in the lounge.

7. Sample Popcorn at the Great American Popcorn Shop

Great American Popcorn Company is one of Galena’s most iconic and fun downtown stops, especially if you’re walking Main Street and want something quick, nostalgic, and giftable. The shop is known for its huge variety of freshly made popcorn—everything from classic buttery and cheddar to more playful flavors like caramel, spicy blends, and seasonal specials. You can get samples of any of their unique blends- just ask!

8. Enjoy a Rootbeer Flight at Rootbeer Reveler

Rootbeer Revelry is one of Galena’s most unique specialty shops, especially if you like nostalgic, old-fashioned soda culture. It’s a small downtown store focused entirely on root beer and craft sodas, offering a huge selection of bottles from different breweries across the country. We suggest trying the rootbeer flights to find your favorite one!

9. Take a Trolley Tour

The Galena Trolley Tour is one of the easiest and most popular ways to get a full overview of the town in about an hour. You board a vintage-style trolley at the depot on Main Street and ride through Galena’s historic downtown and surrounding hills while a guide narrates the city’s history. It’s often recommended as a first activity because it helps you get oriented before exploring shops, restaurants, and museums on your own.

10. Enjoy the Food Options

If you’re feeling hungry, all you need to do is stroll Main Street, and you will find dozens of options! We suggest checking out the Galena House Bakery for their famous empenadas. Churros and Coffee put unique spins on Churro dessert dishes. Campeche Restaurant feature house made Margarita Flights, and delicious, homemade recipes for tacos, fajitas and more. We also loved Fries and Fritez- a French and German inspired restaurant with authentic dishes.
