You will have plenty of options of places to stay when it comes to your visit to Lake Tahoe. However, if you enjoy A frame cabins in the woods, a town with a nostalgic charm and close proximity to Lake Tahoe, Kings Beach A Frame cabin is for you. Nestled among the pines near the shores of Kings Beach, the Kings Beach A-Frame offers the perfect blend of cozy charm and mountain adventure.
With its inviting cabin atmosphere, stylish touches, and convenient location close to beaches, hiking trails, restaurants, and ski resorts, it’s an ideal home base for experiencing the best of Lake Tahoe. Whether you’re sipping coffee on the deck or unwinding after a day of exploring, the A-Frame provides a warm and memorable Tahoe retreat.
1. Kings Beach Recreational Area
Set along the sparkling north shore of Lake Tahoe, the Kings Beach State Recreation Area is the perfect for visitors who want to spend the day swimming, paddleboarding, picnicking beneath the pines, or simply relaxing while taking in breathtaking mountain views.
It’s convenient location makes it easy to stroll down town, eat at a nearby restaurant with beach views and still have an easy walk to the beach. There are also several watercraft rental options nearby, such as Adrift Tahoe. This spot was one of our favorites during our stay in Kings Beach, and we came here several times.
2. Coffee with a View
We loved strolling downtown, getting coffee, then drinking it at the Kings Beach Recreational Area. Our two favorite coffee shops are Tree House Cafe. Just steps from the shores of Lake Tahoe, Tree House Cafe is the perfect place to fuel up before a day of adventure or unwind with a warm drink after exploring the lake. Guests can enjoy handcrafted espresso drinks, fresh pastries, and satisfying breakfast and lunch options while relaxing in the café’s rustic setting.
Java Hut is our other favorite, and they also have cute art work and jewelry created from local artists you can purchase. It’s a small, laid-back coffee stop in Kings Beach that captures the easygoing, beach-town side of Lake Tahoe. Known for quick service and classic coffeehouse favorites, it’s a convenient grab-and-go spot for espresso, iced drinks, and simple breakfast bites before heading to the lake or nearby trails. .
3. Sand Harbor Beach
Sand Harbor Beach is one of the most popular and scenic spots on Lake Tahoe, known for its unbelievably clear turquoise water, smooth granite boulders, and wide sandy shoreline. Because it’s inside a state park, there’s an entry fee and parking can fill up extremely early—often by mid-morning in summer—so arriving early or using shuttle options is key. During peak season, timed entry or reservations may be required for parking, so it’s worth checking ahead before you go. The beach is great for swimming, paddleboarding, and snorkeling, but the water stays very cold even in peak summer, so most people ease in slowly.
There is a delicious restaurant with a great selection of drinks on the beach named Kokanee Grill. If you are not bringing your own food to picnic with at the park, we suggest giving the Kokanee a try! We took a kayaking adventure with Clearly Tahoe, swam on the beach and explored Ramada Point Rocks, where we had some of the best views of the lake!
4. Clearly Tahoe Kayak Adventure
Clearly Tahoe offers one of the most unique ways to experience the lake—you can even rent clear bottom kayaks that let you see straight down into the crystal-clear water of Lake Tahoe. You can take a guided tour or go on your own adventure. We paddled out to the famous Bonsai Rock and got to kayak around Lake Tahoe’s famous smooth boulders.
5. Shop Downtown Kings Beach
Shopping in downtown Kings Beach has a relaxed, small-town charm that perfectly matches the laid-back feel of Lake Tahoe. Along the main streets near the shoreline, you’ll find a mix of locally owned boutiques, surf and ski shops, souvenir stores, and art galleries featuring Tahoe-inspired pieces. Our favorite stores were Robin’s Nest Gift Shop, Sierra Shirts & Shades and Amber Moon Boutique.
6. Donner Lake & Donner Swing
While this itinerary item is a little bit of a drive, about 30 minutes from Kings Beach, the views are worth it! Donner Lake, located just outside Truckee in the Sierra Nevada, is a stunning alpine lake known for its calm waters, mountain scenery, and year-round outdoor recreation. In the summer, visitors come for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and relaxing on sandy beaches framed by granite peaks. The water is often warmer and quieter than nearby Lake Tahoe, making it a favorite for a more peaceful lake day.
If you want to get the best overlook view of Donner Lake, we suggest you visit the iconic Donner Swing. The Donner Swing overlook near Donner Lake is a hidden gem viewpoint in the hills above the lake, offering one of the most memorable photo spots in the area. From the simple wooden swing, you get a sweeping panoramic view of the deep blue water, surrounding pine forests, and the rugged Sierra Nevada peaks near Truckee. The hike or walk to reach the swing can be short but sometimes steep or unmarked, so sturdy shoes and a bit of caution are important.
7. Whitecaps Pizza on the Beach
Whitecaps Pizza is a popular waterfront restaurant in Kings Beach known for its laid-back vibe, comfort food, and unbeatable views of Lake Tahoe. Guests come for the classic, crowd-pleasing pizzas, but stay for the relaxed atmosphere and the chance to dine just steps from the lake. With indoor seating and a patio overlooking the water, it’s a favorite spot for families, groups, and anyone wanting a casual meal after a beach day or sunset walk.
8. Emerald Bay Overlook
The Emerald Bay overlook at Emerald Bay State Park Vista Point is one of the most iconic viewpoints in all of Lake Tahoe, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the bay’s deep blue water, rugged granite cliffs, and the famous Fannette Island at its center. From this elevated vantage point along Highway 89, visitors can take in the full curve of the shoreline and the dramatic contrast between forested mountains and the lake’s vivid turquoise tones. It’s a quick stop with an unforgettable payoff, especially at sunrise or sunset when the light transforms the entire scene into something almost unreal.
9. Hike the Vikingsholm Trail
The Vikingsholm Trail is a scenic and rewarding hike in Emerald Bay State Park that leads down to the historic shoreline estate of Vikingsholm. The trail begins near the Emerald Bay overlook and descends through pine forest with sweeping views of the bay’s turquoise water and dramatic granite cliffs. Though the hike back up is a steady uphill climb, the path is well-traveled and filled with scenic stopping points that make the effort worthwhile.
At the bottom, hikers are rewarded with access to one of the most unique spots on Lake Tahoe—a peaceful beach area and the beautifully preserved Nordic-style mansion set right along the shoreline. The combination of history, architecture, and natural beauty makes the Vikingsholm Trail one of the most memorable hikes in the region.
10. Hike to Eagle Falls
The hike to Eagle Falls is one of the most popular and rewarding short hikes in the Emerald Bay area of Lake Tahoe. Starting right off Highway 89 near the Eagle Falls picnic area, the trail quickly leads you into a forested climb with granite steps, flowing creek views, and constant glimpses of the stunning blue water below. The lower falls are visible almost immediately, while continuing uphill brings you to the upper falls and eventually the trail toward Eagle Lake.
11. Beachside Dining at the GAR
Beach dining in the GAR area of Lake Tahoe offers a relaxed, scenic way to enjoy a meal right by the water. In places like Kings Beach and nearby north shore towns, restaurants often sit just steps from sandy beaches, giving diners views of the lake’s clear blue water and surrounding mountain peaks while they eat. It’s the kind of experience where you can go from swimming or walking along the shore straight to a casual patio meal, with everything from fresh seafood and pizza to burgers and lakeside cocktails served in an easygoing, vacation atmosphere.
12. Drive the Lake Tahoe Scenic Loop
A scenic drive around Lake Tahoe is one of the best ways to experience the lake’s incredible variety of landscapes, from crystal-clear shoreline views to towering mountain passes. The route along Highway 89 and Highway 28 winds through pine forests, passes hidden beaches, and opens up to breathtaking overlooks like Emerald Bay and Sand Harbor. Every stretch offers something different—quiet coves, dramatic cliffs, and charming lakeside towns like Kings Beach—making the journey just as memorable as the destinations. Whether you go for a full loop or a short section, the drive delivers nonstop views of Tahoe’s deep blue water framed by the Sierra Nevada peaks.
