We have been visiting the North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota for over a decade, and every trip to each of these adorable lake towns never disappoints. We have put together a list of our favorite stops that we go back to time and time again! Whether you’re visiting for a weekend getaway or embarking on a full road trip along Lake Superior, these must-visit destinations will add memorable experiences, stunning views, and local flavor to your journey. 1. Iona Beach- Two Harbors



Located just north of Two Harbors along Scenic Highway 61, Iona’s Beach Scientific and Natural Area is one of Minnesota’s most unique Lake Superior destinations. Unlike the typical rocky shoreline, this quiet beach is covered in thousands of smooth pink rhyolite pebbles that create a distinctive musical sound as the waves roll across them.
2. Rustic Inn Cafe (Two Harbors)



A North Shore favorite for decades, the Rustic Inn CafĂŠ is a must-stop for hearty comfort food and legendary homemade pie. Located just north of Two Harbors along Highway 61, the cozy cafĂŠ serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner featuring fresh Lake Superior fish, burgers, sandwiches, soups, and classic Minnesota favorites made from scratch. Before you leave, be sure to browse the attached gift shop filled with North Shore souvenirs, local art, and unique gifts, making the Rustic Inn CafĂŠ a memorable stop on any Lake Superior road trip.
3. Black Beach & Agate Beach (Silver Bay)



Silver Bay is home to two of the North Shore’s most unique beaches, each offering a completely different experience. Black Beach is famous for its striking black sand, created from taconite tailings that washed ashore decades ago, making it one of the only black-sand beaches in the Midwest. Just a few minutes away, Agate Beach is a favorite destination for rock hunters searching for colorful Lake Superior agates and other unique stones polished by the waves.
4. Illgen Falls (Silver Bay)



Hidden within Tettegouche State Park, Illgen Falls is one of the North Shore’s most powerful and underrated waterfalls. A short, relatively easy hike from the parking area leads to scenic overlooks where you can take in the impressive views and hear the roar of the falls below. Less crowded than some of the region’s more famous waterfalls, Illgen Falls offers a peaceful escape and is a rewarding stop for hikers, photographers, and anyone exploring Minnesota’s scenic North Shore.
5. Caribou Trail and Falls (Silver Bay)



For those looking to experience one of the North Shore’s most scenic hikes, the Caribou Trail to Caribou Falls is a must. Located just outside Silver Bay, this moderately easy 1 mile trail winds through a peaceful forest before descending to a breathtaking overlook of the 35-foot waterfall as it cascades into a rugged river gorge. The hike is just over a mile round trip, making it accessible for most visitors while still offering a rewarding adventure. It also makes for a great swimming area depending on the water level. (Obviously, always be careful swimming anywhere without a life guard. Swim at your own risk).
6. Oberg Mountain Hike (Tofte)



The Oberg Mountain Loop is one of the most scenic and rewarding hikes on Minnesota’s North Shore. Located near Tofte, this 2.25-mile loop climbs through a mixed forest before reaching a series of dramatic overlooks with sweeping views of Lake Superior, Oberg Lake, Moose Mountain, and the surrounding Sawtooth Mountains. Each overlook offers a different perspective, making it a favorite destination for photographers and leaf-peepers, especially during the vibrant fall colors.
7. Lutsen Mountains (Alpine Slide & Gondola)- Lutsen



Lutsen Mountains is a year-round destination and one of the North Shore’s premier spots for adventure. During the warmer months, ride the scenic gondola to the summit of Moose Mountain, where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Lake Superior, the Sawtooth Mountains, and miles of pristine forest. Once at the top, explore scenic hiking trails, enjoy lunch with a view, or simply soak in the breathtaking landscape. For a dose of excitement, head back down to experience the Alpine Slide, where you’ll race along more than half a mile of twists, turns, and scenic hillside views on a gravity-powered sled.
8. Wild Country Syrup Shack (Lutsen)



Tucked away near Lutsen, the Wild Country Maple Syrup Shack offers a sweet taste of the North Shore and a glimpse into the art of maple syrup making. This family-owned operation produces 100% pure Minnesota maple syrup using traditional methods, and visitors can stop by to sample syrup, browse locally made products, and learn about the sugaring process during the spring season. The rustic setting and friendly atmosphere make it a fun and unique stop for all ages. We pick up several bottles as gifts when we visit in the fall.
9. Cascade River State Park


Cascade River State Park is a North Shore treasure known for its dramatic waterfalls, rugged hiking trails, and stunning Lake Superior views. Located just north of Lutsen along Scenic Highway 61, the park follows the rushing Cascade River as it tumbles through a series of cascading waterfalls, rocky gorges, and forested landscapes. We love parking off Highway 61, and hiking to the falls, then down to where the river meets Lake Superior.
10. Artist Point (Grand Marais)



A visit to Grand Marais isnât complete without a walk out to Artist Point, one of the most iconic and picturesque spots along Minnesotaâs North Shore. This rocky peninsula stretches into Lake Superior beside the harbor, offering stunning views of the lighthouse, sailboats, waves crashing against ancient volcanic rock, and the vast blue waters of the lake. The easy walking paths make it a perfect stop for photographers, nature lovers, and anyone wanting to experience the rugged beauty of Lake Superior up close. We love stopping at Java Moose, then walking the path with our coffee in hand.
11. Grand Marais Food and Shopping Scene






Grand Marais may be a small harbor town, but its food scene is one of the highlights of Minnesotaâs North Shore. From fresh Lake Superior seafood and cozy cafĂŠs to wood-fired pizza, breweries, and sweet treats, there are plenty of delicious stops to enjoy after a day of exploring.
First off, grab a donut or coffee in the morning from Java Moose (try their maple syrup latte) and World’s Best Donuts, then stroll the harbor. I also suggest you stop at Crosby Bakery for delicious chocolate croissants.



For lunch, we love the Angry Trout Cafe, a North Shore favorite known for fresh, locally inspired dishes, sustainable seafood, and beautiful views near the harbor. Itâs a great spot to enjoy Lake Superior fish, salads, and creative seasonal meals. The Fisherman’s Daughter at Dockside Fish Market is perfect for seafood lovers as well. This waterfront favorite serves up classic fish and chips, smoked fish, sandwiches, and other fresh catches with a true harbor-town feel. If you love tacos, try Hungry Hippie Tacos, featuring Native American fry bread.



For supper, we enjoy My Sister’s Place, which is a casual favorite offering burgers, pizza and sandwiches. We also love Gunflint Tavern, which is located near the harbor and features delicious dinner dishes like honey glazed walleye. Summer time, they have a great rooftop offering awesome drinks.
If you have a sweet tooth for ice cream, we love Superior Creamery, and Sydney’s Frozen Custard. Both places area offer scenic views near the harbor.



We absolutely love all the small businesses in Grand Marais. I often do my Christmas shopping here almost every year. Here are some of our favorites:
- Lady Superior– Non-alchoholic drinks and adorable gifts you can purchase. I love their THC drinks here.
- Lake Superior Trading Post- You will find anything you can imagine that you need for an outdoors or camping trip here. They also have adorable hiking outfits, blankets and gifts for kids.
- The Big Lake Life- My favorite arts and gifts shop featuring local artists and items from one of my favorites, Katie Daisy. I have bought a lot of gifts here.
- The Sweetwater Co.- My favorite clothing shop along the North Shore- they always have the cutest clothes for each season.
- Upstate MN– They feature unique handmade gifts, art and anything reflecting the northern landscape.
- Roam & Whimsy– This unique shop is fun even to experience going there.
- Drury Lane Books– The most beautiful book store of all time, this place has a book for everyone!
12. Gunflint Trail- Grand Marias Overlook & Pincushion Mountain Hike


The legendary Gunflint Trail is one of Minnesotaâs most scenic drives, winding 57 miles through the heart of the Superior National Forest and along the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Beginning just outside Grand Marais, this historic route offers incredible views, peaceful forests, abundant wildlife, and countless opportunities for outdoor adventure. One of the first must-stop viewpoints along the trail is the Pincushion Mountain Overlook, offering sweeping panoramic views of Grand Marais, the harbor, lighthouse, Lake Superior, and the surrounding Sawtooth Mountains (the hike is 4 miles round trip).
13. Honeymoon Bluff Trail (Grand Marais)



Hidden along the scenic Gunflint Trail near Grand Marais, Honeymoon Bluff Trail is a short hike with one of the most rewarding views in Minnesotaâs North Shore region. This quick loop trail winds through a peaceful boreal forest before climbing to a dramatic overlook above Hungry Jack Lake and the surrounding wilderness of the Boundary Waters area.
14. Sisu & Loyly Sauna (Grand Marais)






For a truly relaxing North Shore experience, Sisu + LĂśyly Nordic Sauna in Grand Marais offers the perfect blend of Nordic sauna culture, wellness, and Lake Superior scenery. Located near the harbor, the sauna experience includes cozy relaxation spaces, a bonfire area, and beautiful views toward East Bay and Artist Point. Guests can choose from shared or private sauna sessions, and during the warmer months, the unique floating sauna experience offers a one-of-a-kind way to enjoy the beauty of Lake Superior.
15. Kadunce Wayside & Colvill Beach






Just a short drive north east of Grand Marais along Scenic Highway 61, Kadunce River State Wayside and Colvill Beach offer two peaceful North Shore stops that showcase the rugged beauty of Lake Superior. At Kadunce Wayside, visitors can walk along the shoreline, explore the mouth of the Kadunce River, and access a spur trail that follows the river toward waterfalls, rocky gorges, and the Superior Hiking Trail. Nearby Colvill Beach (often called Paradise Beach) is a quiet, scenic stretch of Lake Superior shoreline perfect for skipping rocks, beach combing, enjoying a picnic, or simply relaxing to the sound of the waves.
16. Judge CR Magney State Park



Located along the rugged North Shore just north of Grand Marais, Judge C.R. Magney State Park is a must-stop destination for waterfall lovers, hikers, and anyone looking to experience Minnesotaâs wild beauty. The park is best known for the mysterious Devilâs Kettle Falls, which is about a 2 mile hike.
17. Susie Islands (Grand Portage)


Located at the far northern tip of Minnesota near Grand Portage, the Susie Islands are a hidden gem of Lake Superior known for their rugged beauty, clear waters, and untouched wilderness. This small group of islands sits just offshore from the Grand Portage area and offers a peaceful escape surrounded by the vast expanse of the lake.
18. Pigeon Falls (Grand Portage)



Located at Grand Portage State Park near the Canadian border, Pigeon Fallsâalso known as High Falls of the Pigeon Riverâis the tallest waterfall in Minnesota and one of the most impressive sights along the North Shore. The powerful Pigeon River drops nearly 120 feet through a rugged gorge, creating a dramatic display of rushing water surrounded by towering forests and ancient rock formations. A short, accessible trail from the visitor center leads through the woods to several overlooks, making this an easy and rewarding stop for visitors of all ages.
19. Kakabeka Falls (Ontario)



If you’re willing to go over the border into Canada to explore more of the beauty off Highway 61, this waterfall is a must see! Known as the âNiagara of the North,â Kakabeka Falls is one of Ontarioâs most spectacular waterfalls and a must-see destination near Thunder Bay. Located along the Kaministiquia River, the falls plunge nearly 130 feet over a dramatic rock gorge, creating a powerful display of rushing water surrounded by forests and rugged Canadian wilderness. The name Kakabeka comes from the Ojibwe word meaning âwaterfall over a cliff,â reflecting the deep Indigenous history and natural significance of this area.
20. Sleeping Giant Provincial Park (Ontario)



Rising dramatically from the waters of Lake Superior, Sleeping Giant Provincial Park is one of Ontarioâs most breathtaking wilderness destinations. Located east of Thunder Bay on the Sibley Peninsula, the park gets its name from the massive rock formation that, when viewed from Thunder Bay, resembles a giant lying on its back. With towering cliffs, rugged trails, pristine forests, and spectacular lake views, it is a must-visit stop for outdoor enthusiasts exploring the Canadian side of Lake Superior.






Here are a few highlights of the park:
Top of the Giant Trail â The Iconic Hike
The most famous hike in the park, Top of the Giant, rewards hikers with some of the most spectacular views in Ontario. This challenging route climbs to the top of the Sleeping Giantâs cliffs, offering panoramic views of Lake Superior, the Sibley Peninsula, and the surrounding wilderness. The full hike is a long adventure (about 21.8 km round trip from the South Kabeyun Trailhead) and typically takes several hours, but the views are unforgettable.
Kabeyun Trail â Scenic Backbone of the Park
The Kabeyun Trail is the main route through Sleeping Giant and is perfect for hikers who want to explore sections of the parkâs rugged coastline. Along the way, youâll find access points to other highlights, including Sea Lion Trail, Tee Harbour, and Top of the Giant. Many visitors hike shorter sections rather than completing the entire route.
Sea Lion Trail â Short & Unique Adventure
For a shorter hike with a big reward, Sea Lion Trail is a great choice. This quick trail leads to a unique rock formation on Lake Superiorâs shoreline, where hikers can enjoy views of the water, cliffs, and fascinating geology. Itâs a perfect add-on for those exploring the Kabeyun Trail.
Thunder Cape Trail â Dramatic Lake Views
This trail leads toward Thunder Cape Bird Observatory and offers incredible views of Lake Superior and the rugged landscape near the âfeetâ of the Sleeping Giant. Itâs a more remote-feeling adventure for those wanting to explore beyond the main overlooks.
Tee Harbour Trail â Easy Scenic Stop
The Tee Harbour Trail is a shorter option that leads to a beautiful Lake Superior overlook with views of islands scattered across the horizon. Itâs a great choice for a peaceful walk, picnic, or a taste of the parkâs shoreline scenery without committing to a long hike.
Nanabosho Lookout Trail â Big Views Without the Full Summit Hike
This challenging climb up the âchestâ of the Giant leads to an incredible viewpoint overlooking the Sibley Peninsula, bays, islands, and Lake Superior. Itâs a rewarding alternative for hikers who want a major overlook experience.
Visit Thunder Bay Lookout
For one of the best views in the park without a long hike, drive to Thunder Bay Lookout. The dramatic cliffside platform overlooks Lake Superior and offers a stunning perspective of the Sleeping Giant formation and surrounding landscape.
Camp Under the Stars at Marie Louise Lake
Sleeping Giant offers both front-country and backcountry camping, allowing visitors to stay overnight and fully experience the parkâs wilderness. Waterfront backcountry sites along trails such as Tee Harbour and Sawyer Bay are especially popular for their beautiful Lake Superior views.
Discover History at Silver Islet
Explore the nearby historic Silver Islet Mine, once one of the worldâs richest silver mines. The area provides a fascinating look into the regionâs mining history while offering scenic views of Lake Superior.
